Ethnic Affairs Hamilton RMS

The Advisory Services act as a conduit between government and community. Some of its proactive initiatives are captured in their projects.

Intercultural Awareness and Communication Training

This OEA project essentially promotes cultural awareness and better service delivery. Staff have developed intercultural training for public servants.

Community Forums

The OEA is conducting a series of community forums around the country which bring ethnic communities together. The forums have a number of different outcomes. One of the main functions is to help build capacity and skills within ethnic communities. It is also an opportunity for OEA and other government agencies to provide feedback to the communities and receive community feedback on key initiatives that affect them. By bringing many different ethnic groups together the community forums provide a great opportunity to develop networks.

Auckland Regional Settlement Strategy (ARSS)

The Auckland Regional Settlement Strategy (ARSS) is a major central and local government initiative that has been developed to ensure optimal settlement outcomes for new migrants and refugees. OEA has played a key role in ensuring the ethnic community perspectives are represented in the development of the ARSS policy and implementation.

These projects utilise different forums and visual media to promote visibility of diversity and encourage participation and development of ethnic communities.

Narrative Forums

These forums will utilise a range of tools and programmes to stimulate discussion on key issues that relate to Diversity & National Identity in New Zealand. The OEA is currently producing a series of video vignettes that capture different aspects of contemporary ethnic diversity in the New Zealand context.
