Intercultural Dialogue workshop with Youth Providers in Manukau
With a high proportion of people under 25, Manukau is an ideal region for the Office of Ethnic Affairs to continue its work with youth providers in the area of youth leadership. On 23 March 2009, the Intercultural Advisory Team ran an Intercultural Dialogue workshop focusing on intercultural communication for youth providers in Manukau. The workshop aimed to introduce a tool that could assist providers grappling with the challenges and opportunities of New Zealand’s increasing ethnic and cultural diversity.
The workshop was attended by 43 youth providers of diverse backgrounds. They were introduced to an intercultural dialogue tool to help them engage and interact better through conversations about the benefits of diversity in their communities, and challenge stereotypes, discrimination and exclusion. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive and many expressed interest in continuing their learning in the area. Participants will be able to join an online community which will enable them to learn from and support each other to enable more effective engagement in their work promoting youth leadership.
The Office of Ethnic Affairs hopes that workshops of this type will lead to greater cohesion and feelings of safety in South Auckland. We would like to thank the Ministry of Youth Development, Manukau City Council and the Manukau Institute of Technology for their assistance in delivering the workshop.
